Among his duties, Alvarez works with the infielders and outfielders and coaches third base. He also throws batting practice and works with the players on base-running and strength and conditioning.

A native of Tom's River, New Jersey, Alvarez played high school baseball in Miami for Florida Christian. At MDC, he earned an Associate in Arts degree. From there, he majored in political science at Elon University, earning a Bachelor’s degree.

He played his sophomore season at MDC before transferring to Elon University, where he made the Southern Conference all-tournament team in 2013. Alvarez had an impressive .872 OPS that season, leading Elon to the NCAA Tournament.

After that season, Alvarez was drafted in the 22nd round by the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Following two years in the low minors, Alvarez started his paid coaching career back home at MDC in 2017. He has helped the Sharks win four conference titles – 2017, 2019, 2021 and 2022. He also helped the Sharks win a state championship in 2021.

As for choosing to coach at MDC, Alvarez said: “Miami Dade College has an amazing reputation. It was an easy decision to come coach here.”
