Perfect Season comes to a halt in Fort Myers
The Miami Dade Sharks perfect season came to a stunning halt as they fell to Florida Southwestern State College in a 3-set sweep. This match, a rematch of the 2022 and 2023 NJCAA National Championship battles, saw the Buccaneers overpower the Sharks with a solid all-around performance.
The Bucs dominated the first set, hitting an impressive .440 compared to Miami Dade's .320, and carried their momentum through the next two sets with a final attacking percentage of .226, compared to Miami Dade's .152. Florida Southwestern's offense was spearheaded by standout performances from D1 Transfer, Julija Grubisic Cabo, who tallied 11 kills and 12.5 points, and Abby Toeniskoetter, who added 8 kills with a stellar .500 hitting percentage. Magi Milicevic also played a crucial role with 6 kills and 9.5 points, while the Buccaneers' aggressive serving, including 9 service aces, kept the Sharks on the defensive.
For Miami Dade, Katielle Alonzo led the offense with 8 kills, and Luyeisy Marquez contributed 9 kills, though the team struggled to find their rhythm, hitting just .152 as a unit. Esthefany Rabit had a strong showing with 6 kills and an efficient .400 hitting percentage, but the Sharks' nine service errors and inability to contain the Bucs' attack left them vulnerable.
This loss marked the first defeat of the season for Miami Dade, just weeks shy of the FCSAA State Tournament which will be held in Fort Myers.
