Sharks take down Falcons after a 2 week layoff
The Miami Dade Sharks remained undefeated, but it was not without a battle against a determined Daytona State College Falcons team, pulling off a five-set thriller. Miami Dade's return to the court was a close one but they ultimately triumphed in the fifth set.
The match began with Miami Dade struggling to find their rhythm, as they posted a negative hitting percentage of -.053 in the first set. Daytona State came in motivated, looking to capitalize on Miami Dade's two week break. Despite early frustrations, Miami Dade regrouped in the second set, improving to a .310 hitting percentage, led by Katielle Alonzo Vargas, who recorded 16 kills and a .225 hitting percentage overall.
In the third set, Miami Dade stumbled again, hitting just .094, but they still kept themselves in the match with timely defensive stops. Mia Martinez was a defensive standout, recording 15 digs throughout the match to frustrate Daytona State's attack. Maria Clara Antunes contributed with 28 assists, setting the tempo for her teammates.
The fourth set saw a renewed Miami Dade, as they pushed their hitting percentage back up to .278. Esthefany Rabit was unstoppable at the net, posting 15 kills with a blistering .700 hitting percentage, which would ultimately be the deciding factor in the close sets.
In the decisive fifth set, Miami Dade hit their stride with a .320 percentage, closing out the match. Despite the pressure from Daytona State, Miami Dade's depth shined through, as players like Angelica Rodriguez (10 kills) and Luana Borsatto (7 kills) stepped up when needed most.
The Sharks will now travel to Melbourne to take on the Eastern Florida State College Titans, who they defeated 3-1 earlier this year.
