Sharks Battle to Scoreless Draw in Season Opener
The Miami Dade College Women's Soccer team kicked off their 2025 campaign with a hard-fought 0–0 draw against Monroe University on Friday afternoon.
The Sharks set the tone early, nearly breaking through in the 17th minute when Rebeka Gaal's shot rattled off the post. Betzael Contreras and Naya Megnin kept the pressure on with dangerous looks, forcing Monroe goalkeeper Magdalena Syrek into early action.
On the other end, Ashley Fonseca anchored the Sharks' defense, coming up with five key saves to deny Monroe's leading striker, Wiktoria Mikrut, on multiple occasions.
In the second half, Miami Dade surged forward, piling up 10 shots after the break. Kyara Ormazabal, Mariana Sánchez Gómez, and Luciana Mejia all tested Syrek, while late efforts from Tessa Abreu and Jayla Espinosa kept Monroe pinned in their own end. Despite controlling long stretches of the match and outshooting the Mustangs 16–10, the Sharks couldn't find the final touch.
Fonseca's clean sheet and a balanced team effort ensured Miami Dade walked away from their season opener with a draw.
Vengoechea's squad will now have 11 days off before making the trip to the Northeast where they'll play Harford Community College and face off against Monroe University once again.
