Gurgel puts on a clinic
The Miami Dade College Sharks delivered a commanding performance on the pitch, defeating St. Thomas University JV 5-0 in a one-sided contest. The Sharks dominated from start to finish, with forward Julia Gurgel leading the charge with an impressive four-goal haul.
The match saw Miami Dade set the tone early, with Gurgel opening the scoring in the 20th minute. Her first goal came off a well-executed solo effort, putting Miami Dade up 1-0. Just three minutes later, Gurgel struck again, this time converting a well-placed pass from Kyra Tuesta to double the lead.
The second half saw Miami Dade continue to apply relentless pressure. In the 66th minute, Tuesta added her name to the scoresheet, finishing off a setup from Tessa Abreu to make it 3-0. Second after the restart, Gurgel capitalized on a defensive error, completing her hat trick with another unassisted goal, pushing the lead to 4-0.
Gurgel wasn't done yet; in the 83rd minute, she capped off her remarkable performance with her fourth goal of the match, again assisted by Abreu, bringing the final score to 5-0. Gurgel's clinical finishing was the standout of the day, as she made the most of her six shots on goal, converting four of them.
Miami Dade's defense was equally effective, limiting St. Thomas to just two shots in the entire match, both of which were saved by goalkeeper Scarlett Veloza Albarracin. The Sharks' backline, led by the solid play of Mariana Lima and Fernanda Ramirez, ensured that Veloza Albarracin had little to worry about throughout the game.
With this comprehensive victory, Miami Dade College continues to build momentum, showcasing their attacking prowess and defensive solidity. The Sharks will look to carry this form into their next match as they aim to maintain their winning streak.
The Sharks move to 4-1 on the year with their next matchup coming against conference opponent Polk State College on Thursday, September 12th.
