Kamariya Simmons scores 14 and brings down 13 boards in a tight game against Indian River

The Miami Dade Sharks women's basketball team dropped a close matchup against the Indian River St College Pioneers 71-64, Wednesday evening. The Sharks drop to 2-10 while the Pioneers go up to 11-4.

The Pioneers got the scoring started in this matchup by causing mayhem on the defensive end, which led to a transition bucket by Freshman guard Markhyia Davis. The Pioneers then picked up the pace a bit to make the score 7-2 with 6:19 remaining in the first. The Sharks went on a 14-6 run to go up by three but that didn't last long as Indian River tied the scoring up at 16 with a three of their own.

Both teams went scoreless for the next 1:39 but Shameir Quimby took one to the cup to give the Sharks a two-point lead. The Sharks and the Pioneers would then go back and forth to tie up the score 27-27 with less than 10 seconds remaining in the second quarter. A free throw by Kamariya Simmons gave the Sharks a one point lead heading into the second half.

Jamicia Davis did a little bit of everything to fill up the stat sheet in the first minute of the 3rd quarter by drilling a pair of free throws, dishing out an assist and bringing down a defensive rebound. The Sharks went on a 7-0 run fueled by Renae Brant but to no avail. The Pioneers slowly made their comeback and eventually took over at 45-44. A layup by Davis and a three pointer by Iva Cholakoska to meet the buzzer made the score 49-47 in favor of the Sharks.

A stellar performance in the 4th by the Pioneers is what propelled them to victory. Indian River shot an outstanding 70% from the field while the Sharks shot a measly 27%. 13 of the Sharks 15 points in the last quarter were scored by Farida Khaled Hassan Radwan and Jamicia Davis. The formidable duo of D'yanna Maxey and Jordan Boddie were too much to handle for the Sharks as they went on to score 17 points in the 4th quarter.

The Sharks will look to recover at home this weekend when they play the Daytona State Falcons. The game is slated for Saturday, January 14 at 2 PM.
