MDC Athletics Mourns the Loss of Former Head Baseball Coach Steve Hertz
It is with deep sorrow that the Miami Dade College Athletics Department announces the passing of our former head baseball coach, Steve Hertz, who passed away on December 4, 2025, at the age of 80. Coach Hertz was a beloved leader, mentor, and cornerstone of our baseball program, and his loss will be felt deeply across the MDC community.
Steve joined the MDC baseball program in 1984 and led the team until his retirement in 2010. Under his stewardship, the Sharks achieved remarkable success, compiling over 900 victories, sustaining a winning percentage near 73 percent, and capturing multiple conference championships.
Coach Hertz's influence extended far beyond wins and losses. Countless young men who walked into our locker rooms left as stronger players and better people thanks to his guidance. More than just teaching baseball fundamentals, he instilled discipline, teamwork, and character.
His commitment to the game touched not only MDC but the broader baseball community. In 2007, Steve expanded his coaching footprint globally by managing the Tel Aviv Lightning of the then-active Israel Baseball League, bringing his passion and expertise to an international stage.
Coach Hertz was a mentor, a builder of tradition, and a source of pride. His legacy will live on in the many athletes he developed, the generations he influenced, and the values he championed.
We offer our deepest condolences to his family and loved ones. As we grieve, we will also honor his memory by continuing to build on the foundation he laid on and off the field.
