Big 6th inning pushes Miami Dade past Daytona

The Miami Dade Sharks baseball team toppled the Daytona State College Falcons 9-2 on Saturday afternoon. Miami Dade now moves to 22-18 on the year with the victory and 15-8 in conference.

D'Angelo Ortiz got things started on Saturday after he hit a base knock up the middle giving Miami Dade a 1-0 lead in the early goings. Freshman Carlos Jacome added to the fun after he grounded into a fielder's choice, driving in another run.

In the bottom of the fifth, Ortiz once again punished the Falcons this time taking a hanging slider deep for this first homerun of the year.

An inning later, Geremy Garcia hit a grand slam to give the Sharks a 9-0 lead to put the game out of reach.

On the mound for the Sharks was Cuban native Juan Miguel Fernandez. The righty allowed four hits and zero runs over six strong innings, striking out nine and walking one to continue his strong sophomore campaign.

Miami Dade looks to sweep the series when they take on the Falcons in game 2 of the doubleheader at 3 PM today.
